Excellence with Cost Effective Results

Matthew Furse was not born in Texas, but he got here as fast as he could. A native of the United Kingdom (Sussex to be precise), he trained as a Barrister (Trial Lawyer) and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2012. He met his American wife in London where they lived for six years until the lure of the people, weather, and food of Texas became too strong to resist. After passing the Texas Bar Exam, he joined Glast, Phillips & Murray where he represents U.S. and international clients in litigation across the United States and beyond.

An experienced civil litigation attorney, Matthew has successfully represented clients throughout all stages of trial and appellate proceedings. He acts for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and trusts in a range of complex litigation matters, particularly multiparty cases with a multi-jurisdictional or international element. This includes advising and representing clients in cross-border insolvency matters under the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency and Chapter 15 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Matthew has an acute understanding of the emotional and financial investment clients make when they find themselves involved in litigation. He therefore prides himself on being highly responsive and accessible, and is able to explain complex legal concepts in straightforward language.

Known on the rugby pitch as ‘The Enforcer’, Matthew is also a powerful presence in court and relishes the opportunity to fight in his client’s corner at trial in either state or federal court. He also understands that discretion can sometimes be the better part of valor and can use his robust advocacy skills to facilitate the resolution of disputes through negotiation, mediation, or arbitration.

Matthew also practices with the firm of Jamieson Alexander (www.jamiesonalexander.co.uk) in London, principally in the fields of commercial, property, probate, bankruptcy, and data protection litigation. Matthew can therefore act for U.S. clients on either side of the Atlantic and provide seamless access to the full range of courts in the U.K., including the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA). He can also advise and represent clients in cross-border intellectual property and probate disputes, together with Mareva worldwide freezing injunctions.

In his spare time, Matthew enjoys a diverse range of interests including traveling, cooking, opera, shooting and country pursuits, rugby, NFL/College Football, and powerlifting.

Matthew’s recent experience includes the following:

• Co-counsel with David W. Dodge for the defendant, a heavyweight regional mortgage lender and NASCAR sponsor, in a federal trademark infringement and unfair competition suit in the Eastern District of New York. Undertook extensive briefing work on a motion to dismiss for lack of personal jurisdiction and failure to state a claim. The motion was granted and the case dismissed for lack of personal jurisdiction.

• Acting in a suit to recover cryptocurrency valued >$10m following an alleged hack and theft from an online wallet platform.

• Preparing extensive written advice in an attorney malpractice claim concerning an asset sale and resulting lawsuit brought against the officers and shareholders of the corporation.

• Drafting work for hire I.P. Agreements for corporate clients in the construction industry.

• Advising a U.S. firm regarding a request for service of a subpoena in the U.K. pursuant to the Hague Convention.
